Istanbul (formerly Constantinople) is situated on the Bosporous, straddling Asia and Europe. There is evidence of human settlement going back roughly 3,000 years, to the Thracian tribes of the 13th–11th centuries BCE. Colonized by the Greeks in the 7th century, and under Roman rule from 196 CE, the city was known as Byzantium until 330 CE. In 330 CE, the city was renamed Constantinople and made the capital of the Roman Empire. From there, it grew to be the largest city in the western hemisphere. The city was not renamed ‘Istanbul’ until the modernization of Turkey in 1923 under Kemal Ataturk.
Istanbul’s history as one of the largest and richest cities in the world make it home to stunning and well preserved monuments. The most prominent of these are the Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Place and the Hippodrome of Constantinople.
