Qalb Lozeh is one of the ‘Dead Cities’, located in Northwestern Syria in the Idlib Governorate near the Turkish border. The city gained UNESCO World Heritage status in 2011 as part of the ‘Ancient Villages of Northern Syria’ grouping.
The most prominent feature of Qald Lozeh is the church, which was constructed in 460CE. It features a wide basilica and soaring arches, which represents a break from the traditional Byzantine columns which separate the aisles from the nave. It is believed to be the first church in Syria in this architectural style.
Today, the city is still inhabited, mostly by Druze minority residents. The total population is roughly 1300. It is still primarily agricultural, with a focus on tobacco and olives. The remains of ancient Qalb Lozeh remain in relatively good condition.
