Qalaat Sheizar is a castle located north of Hama overlooking the Orontes river. The town was recorded by Diodorus Siculus in the 1st century BCE, detailing its foundation by the cavalry from Alexander the Great’s army.
The Castle and surrounding area became an important center of the Arab frontline against the Crusaders and was carefully observed from nearby fortifications of Qalaat Abu Qubeis and Qalaat al-Mahalbeh. The castle was severely damaged in several earthquakes during the 12th century, and was rebuilt by Qalaun. The castle fell into disuse soon after.
