Located in the town of al-Mishtaya in the Homs Governorate, Saint George’s Monastery is a historic Greek Orthodox Monastery. The valley in which it sits has been considered the regional centre of Greek Orthodox Christianity since the 6th Century CE.
The monastery itself is said to be built in the 5th century over a statue of Homerus which was constructed by Byzantine emperor Justinian I. The present day monastery occupies 6,000m squared. The buildings were rebuilt in 1857 after the monastery had fallen into disrepair. Below the main courtyard still likes an older 13th century chapel which contains iconostasis depicting the life of St. George. At the same lower level are remnants of the original 5th and 6th century constructions including amphorae.
