Once the capital of the Roman province of Arabia, Bosra was an important stop on the caravan route to Mecca.  An ancient city, Bosra is mentioned in the Egyptian Tell el-Amarna tablets which date from the 14th century B.C.  In 106 A.D, Bosra was incorporated into the Roman Empire under the name Colonian Bostra.  Attesting to this period of Roman occupation, Bosra boasts a magnificent 2nd-century Roman theatre (probably constructed under Trajan) and early Christian ruins.  Later, during Byzantine times, Bosra was a major frontier market.  It was the first Byzantine city that the Arabs entered in the early seventh century during the period of rapid Islamic expansion.  A number of important structures remain from that time, including the Al-Omari Mosque, one of the oldest surviving mosques in Islamic history, and the Madrasah Mabrak al-Naqua, one of the most celebrated in Islam.  Bosra was fortified between 481 and 1251 AD and the old city walls are, for the most part, well preserved.
