From the 7th century BC onward, Historic Jeddah, located in Saudi Arabia on the Eastern shore of the Red Sea, was a valuable port for Indian Ocean trade and was also an important city along the route to Mecca. The cultural exchange among the peoples of the Red Sea and the Muslim pilgrims between the 16th and 20th centuries is expressed in the city’s architecture, and it is the last surviving urban area along the Red Sea coast that still contains elements of this cultural amalgamation. The Eastern and Western influences that combined in architecture and art as a result of the Suez Canal are visibly expressed in Jeddah’s 19th-century Roshan tower houses. The city is still celebrated as a gateway to Mecca, and is a place where Muslims of all backgrounds find common ground.
