Patan’s 17th century Balkumari Temple is located well outside the town center. Its four approaches are guarded by stone lions. The carved (originally stone) temple deity has been stolen twice. The present image, the second replacement statue, depicts a female figure astride a peacock, her head bowed, her slender and her hands in a prayerful mudra. The temple also has a fine Ganesh statue – also a reconstruction of a stolen original. The temple’s central courtyard is frequently used by both pilgrims and local residents for prayerful reflection.
