Cyrene was an Ancient Greek and Roman city near present Shahhat in Libya. It was the oldest and most prominent of the five Greek cities in the region. Cyrene lies in a lush valley in the Jebel Akhdar uplands, and was reputed to have been named after Kyrene the water nymph who the god Apollo fell in love with. It was also known as the ‘Athens of Africa’ as it was home to a famous school of philosophy in the 3rd century BC, founded by a disciple of Socrates. Founded by immigrants from the Greek island Thera during the 7th century, it was not until 96 BC that Cyrenaica came under Roman rule and was united with Crete to form a senatorial province, with Cyrene as local capital. After two centuries of prosperity, the city’s main export, a medicinal herb, was harvested to extinction, the area was hit by multiple earthquakes, and the Arab conquest had led the city into decline. It was completely abandoned by the 4th century. The UNESCO site we have today includes the sanctuary of Apollo, the upper city with a forum and basilica, and a huge Doric column in the Roman section.
