The Buddhas of Bamiyan were two large Buddha figures located in Hazarajat northwest of Kabul, Afghanistan. They stood in two niches hollowed from the Bamiyan Valley’s sandstone cliff face. The Buddahs were also carved from the sandstone, but a mixture of mud and straw covered with stucco and paint added colorful details to the figures. The first Buddha measured 38 metres in height and was carved in 507 CE, while the second measured 55 metres and was carved in 554 CE. Iconoclasts destroyed the two statues in 2001. Both were examples of the Gandharan School in Buddhist art. The Bamiyan Valley, where the statues stood, contains artifacts from the 1st through 13th centuries and was a place of exchange between Indian, Roman, Hellenistic, and Islamic cultures. Bamiyan is located on the Silk Road, making it an important place for ancient trade.
